Expanding Global Research & Collaboration

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine was established in 2017 and since then has grown to have 70+ faculty members. Our research space is located in several buildings on and off campus including the Clinical Teaching Facility, the Antiviral Research Center in Hillcrest, the Stein Clinical Research Building, the Centralized Research Services Facility, the Moore's Cancer Center, the Biomedical Research Facility, the San Diego VA Medical Center, the Cellular and Molecular Medicine East Building, the Jacobs Medical Center, the Owen Clinic and the George Palade Laboratories for Cellular and Molecular Medicine.

Worldwide Research Partnerships

International collaborations in Mozambique, Mexico, India, South Africa, and Peru are key to our division's expanding international programs, driven by our growing international medicine program and faculty research.

About the Division Chief

Dr. Timothy (Tim) Wilkin is the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health. Along with Dr. Wilkin, the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health will be led by Dr. Constance Benson as the Vice Chief of Education, Dr. Anne Cowell as the Vice Chief of Clinical Affairs, Dr. Jamila K. Stockman as the Vice Chief of Global Public Health, Dr. Sanjay Mehta as Chief of the VA Infectious Diseases Section, Dr. John Ayers as the Vice Chief of Innovation, and Dr. Laura Bamford as the Director of the Owen Clinic.

Dr. Wilkin received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and attended medical school at Ohio State University. He went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals. He received fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at Columbia University and was supported by an Individual National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health. While at Columbia, he completed a Master's of Public Health with a concentration in Patient-Oriented Research. 

Dr. Wilkin was invited to join the faculty of Weill Medical College at Cornell University in 2002, and was recruited as the Chief of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego in 2024. In addition to his role as Chief, Dr. Wilkin serves as the contact PI for the CASCADE RB2 UG1. He has extensive experience with international clinical trials through prior and ongoing ACTG work, investigator-initiated collaborations, and being contact PI for U awards from NCI. His prior leadership work within the ACTG includes chairing the co-infections and malignancy committee, being a member of the SASC (2018-present) and AEC, and being the current chair of ART TSG. He has been honored by the ACTG with the John E. Carey Young Investigator Award and the Constance P. Wofsy Women’s Health Investigator Award. Altogether, Dr. Wilkin will use his experience to be a productive researcher, clinician, and educator in infectious diseases at the University.
