Dr. McCutchan begins first longitudinal study of complications of AIDS.
Dr. Richman co-chairs the first AZT studies, conducted in collaboration with Burroughs Wellcome. The Treatment Center was one of only 12 sites involved in this study, which included 32 HIV-infected San Diegans.
The Treatment Center opens. It conducts a number of studies, including many from the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Treatment Center participates in industry-sponsored clinical trials to help develop better treatments for HIV and AIDS. Additional studies conducted by the California Collaborative Treatment Group, sponsored by the Universitywide AIDS Research Program, are also conducted by The Treatment Center.
The Treatment Center changes its name to AntiViral Research Center (AVRC) to reflect its growth of research activities beyond HIV and AIDS, into other infectious disease of global significance.
AntiViral Research Center (AVRC) begins HCV clinical trials research.
